Buying guide, comparison and FAQ
How to choose a patient monitor
- Spot check or continuous. Spot-check monitors take periodic NIBP, SpO2 and temperature readings in clinics, med-surg and triage: the Welch Allyn Connex Spot (compare Connex Spot configurations) and the Edan iM3, which also has continuous and ward-round modes. The Connex Vital Signs Monitor 6800 handles both spot-check and continuous monitoring. Bedside monitors such as the Edan iM8, iM60, iM70 and X-series and the Mindray ePM display ECG, respiration, SpO2, NIBP and temperature continuously.
- CO2 and IBP: installed or optional. Edan G2 configurations (iM8-G2, iM70 G2, X12-G2) ship with sidestream CO2 installed; the standard iM8, iM60 and iM70 have open ports for later CO2 and IBP modules. The Mindray ePM 10M adds CO2 through a plug-in module, and the Connex VSM 6800 offers capnography configurations. Check each listing for what is installed versus optional.
- SpO2 technology. Connex Spot configurations offer Nonin, Nellcor or Masimo SpO2; the ePM 10M has Masimo SET standard with Nellcor OxiMax optional; Edan monitors use Edan SpO2. If you need a specific SpO2 technology, note it on your quote and we'll match the configuration.
- Connectivity. The Edan iM60, X-series and iM20 have built-in Wi-Fi; the iM8 does not offer Wi-Fi. The iM60 and iM20 connect to the Edan MFM-CMS central station, and the iM60 and ePM 10M support HL7. Connex Spot models come as base, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi upgradeable or Wi-Fi.
- Transport. The Edan iM20 has a 5" touch screen, weighs under 3.3 lb (1.5 kg) with battery, is IP44 rated and runs about 5.5 hours on battery.

FAQ
What is the difference between a spot-check and a continuous patient monitor?
A spot-check monitor such as the Connex Spot takes periodic vital signs (NIBP, SpO2, temperature) and moves between rooms. A continuous bedside monitor such as the Edan iM8, iM60 or ePM 10M stays with one patient and displays ECG, respiration, SpO2, NIBP and temperature continuously with alarms.
Is CO2 included?
Only on configurations that list it as installed, such as the Edan iM8-G2, iM70 G2 and X12-G2 and the Connex VSM 6800 capnography models. Other Edan bedside monitors have open CO2 ports for a module added later; IBP cables and transducers are separate purchases.
Can these monitors send readings to our EMR or a central station?
Many can. The iM60 supports HL7 and the Edan MFM-CMS central station, the ePM 10M has HL7 and DIAP protocols, and Connex Spot Wi-Fi models transfer readings wirelessly. Tell us your EMR or central station on your quote and we'll match the configuration.
Can we buy on a Vizient or Provista contract or request a quote?
Yes. Vizient and Provista members can request contract pricing; request a quote or call (800) 575-2375.
