Buying guide, comparison and FAQ
How to choose an AED
- Semi-automatic or fully automatic. On a semi-automatic AED the rescuer presses the Shock button; a fully automatic AED delivers the shock itself after a stand-clear warning. Both versions are available for the ZOLL AED 3 Semi / Fully Automatic, the Powerheart G5 Semi / Fully Automatic, the LIFEPAK CR2 and HeartSine (350P/450P semi, 360P fully automatic).
- CPR coaching. ZOLL Real CPR Help measures compression depth and rate; Powerheart G5 Intellisense CPR feedback works with the included ICPR pads; LIFEPAK CR2 offers cprCOACH and cprINSIGHT analysis during compressions; the HeartSine 450P CPR Rate Advisor reports compression rate.
- Pediatric use. The AED 3 uses one set of CPR Uni-padz with a Child button. HeartSine models take a Pediatric-Pak (ages 1 to 8 or up to 55 lb), the Powerheart G5 uses Intellisense pediatric pads and the LIFEPAK 1000 takes infant/child reduced energy electrodes.
- Ongoing consumables. HeartSine Pad-Pak combines battery and electrodes in one cartridge with a 4-year life. The AED 3 battery has a 5-year standby life and its Uni-padz a 5-year shelf life. The Powerheart G5 battery has a 4-year standby life and its pads a 2-year shelf life.
- Readiness monitoring. LIFEPAK CR2 and Connected HeartSine models report to LIFELINKcentral over Wi-Fi; the AED 3 offers optional Wi-Fi reporting; ZOLL PlusTrac Professional manages AED program tracking.
- Environment. AED 3 and Powerheart G5 are rated IP55 and HeartSine samaritan PAD models IP56 for dust and water. The LIFEPAK 1000 is built for first responders and offers an ECG display version.

FAQ
Should we choose a semi-automatic or fully automatic AED?
Semi-automatic models let the rescuer control when the shock is delivered. Fully automatic models deliver the shock without a button press. The ZOLL AED 3, Powerheart G5, LIFEPAK CR2 and HeartSine lines each offer both types.
Do we need a prescription to buy an AED?
Our ZOLL AED Plus packages listed "with Medical Prescription" include one. HeartSine states the samaritan PAD 350P can be purchased without a prescription. Contact us if your facility needs a prescription for another model.
Which AEDs work for children?
Each of these AEDs has a pediatric option: AED 3 Child button with Uni-padz, HeartSine Pediatric-Pak, Powerheart G5 pediatric pads, LIFEPAK CR2 QUIK-STEP electrodes and LIFEPAK 1000 infant/child electrodes.
Can we buy on Vizient or Provista contract pricing?
Yes. Vizient and Provista members can request contract pricing; request a quote or call (800) 575-2375.
